In the series premiere of this drama based on the best-selling book series, it is four months after a tragic car accident killed the parents of 17-year-old Elena and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy, who are still adjusting to this new reality and living with their Aunt Jenna. Elena finds some comfort with best friend Bonnie and frenemy Caroline, while trying to sort out her feelings for former boyfriend Matt, but Jeremy is hard-pressed to find the same comfort, instead hanging out with a bad crowd and trying to figure out why Matt's sister, Vicki, is suddenly rejecting him to be with his rival, Tyler. As the school year begins, Elena and her friends are fascinated by a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore. Stefan and Elena are immediately drawn to one another, but Elena doesn't realize that Stefan is hiding a dark, deadly secret -- he is a vampire. As Elena and Stefan get to know each other one night at a bonfire party, chaos erupts when Vicki is attacked and left bleeding from a savage bite to the neck. Stefan finds that his older brother, Damon Salvatore, has returned to town, and fears that Damon is responsible for the attack. Damon notices how similar Elena looks to someone important in the brothers' past and fixes his sights on her as well. | ELENA MEETS DAMON AND LEARNS ABOUT
STEFAN'S PAST LOVE - As Mystic Falls prepares for a festival to
celebrate the passing of a comet, Vicki is in the hospital recovering
from Damon's attack. Stefan goes to the hospital and tries to use his
abilities to make Vicki forget who attacked her, but his attempt is
cut short when Matt arrives. Jeremy continues to struggle with his
drug use and his feelings for Vicki. At a parent/teacher conference,
Mr. Tanner warns a worried Aunt Jenna that Jeremy is in trouble and
needs intervention. Elena goes to the Salvatore house to talk to
Stefan, but finds Damon instead. Damon tells her about Stefan's past
relationship with a girl named Katherine, and when Stefan arrives
home, Elena is surprised that he seems upset to see her there.
Meanwhile, Vicki's memory of the attack begins to come back to her and
Damon used his power of persuasion to make her forget what happened.
Meanwhile, Elena realizes she has to tell Stefan how she feels about
him and the two share their first kiss as the comet lights up the sky
over Mystic Falls. Finally, Damon set his sights on Caroline as his

back, impressing everyone with his skill. Mr. Tanner reluctantly lets
Stefan join the football team. Elena invites Stefan and Bonnie to
dinner, hoping that the two will bond, but the evening is disrupted by
the unexpected and unwelcome arrival of Damon and Caroline. Finally,

everything changes when Elena accidentally makes a devastating

repairing her relationship with Jeremy. Jeremy is worried about Anna,
but not sure he's on board with her latest plan for the future. While
Caroline is enjoying her day as Queen of the celebration, she also
tries to help Matt and Tyler get their friendship back on track.
Finally, although Damon and Alaric do their best to stop him,
Johnathan Gilbert sets a plan in motion that brings Founder's Day to
