(Dr. Bruce Hampton) Mitchell Whitfield, who portrays Jennifer Aniston's ex-fiance Barry, the dentist, on NBC's "Friends," will now have the distinction of playing duel dentist roles on the same network.
"I guess the mark of my career will be that of obnoxious orthodontists," jokes Whitfield. "The main difference between Bruce and Barry is that Bruce is not mean-spirited, he's likable and hopefully viewers will be rooting for him soon, " says Whitfield.
The Brooklyn born (September 8) and raised actor has been assured of "Barry" recurring on "Friends" for the fall season, so he considers himself twice-blessed as an actor to be so busy. Most fans, however, recognize Whitfield when they see him on the street and yell out "Stan," as they remember him fondly from his role opposite Ralph Macchio in the hit film, "My Cousin Vinny."
As a young child in Brooklyn, Whitfield had a front row seat to the world of entertainment when his mother, a Broadway actress and singer, would bring her young son on tour, exposing him to all aspects of the business. A graduate of The New York High School of Performing Arts, Whitfield's career took a not often seen path, when he immediately began work in film before moving on to television. Known among casting agents and directors as "The New York Guy," he started getting film breaks after starring as "Eugene" in the national tour of "Brighton Beach Memoirs." Film directors started to take notice after his film debut in "Reversal of Fortune," directed by Barbet Schroder.
His additional film credits include "Dogfight," "Critics Choice" and the upcoming "Sgt. Bilko" with Steve Martin, Dan Ackroyd and Phil Hartman.
Whitfield's other television credtis include guest-starring roles in "Blossom," "Double Rush" and "The George Carlin Show." Since he was 17 years old, Whitfield has also had steady work in voiceovers, keeping him solvent while awaiting his next job. He is currently the voice of Blockbuster Entertainment.
Whitfield considers himself to be "a four-year old in a 31 year-old body," as his hobbies include video games and collecting baseball cards. He resides in Los Angeles with his girlfriend, actress Leah Remini.
