UPN's Fall 1999 Schedule

Day Time Name Description
Monday 8:00 Moesha
Grammy Award winning Brandy plays Moesha Mitchell, a vivacious teenager trying to figure out her place in life. First it was a power struggle with her dad, then it became a struggle with peer pressure to honor her own values, now it's a whole new world as she starts college. That's of course, if she goes at all. As we ended last season, Moesha has been offered a journalist's dream job, staff writer at VIBE magazine. Opportunities like this don't come along everyday. Will she take the job or attend college in the fall? This is just the first of many adult decisions that Moesha will face as we continue to watch her grow up. Fortunately, she's surrounded by her family who always keeps her grounded; her father Frank, her stepmother Dee, and her younger brother, Myles. Even though her family will always be there for her, as Mo grows from teenager to young adult, she crosses into a life where she must take responsibility for her actions and often depends on herself to solve her own problems. With her best friends around to really spice things up, Niecy at the University of Southern California, and Hakeem & Kim at Santa Monica College, life will only get richer. You never know which star of screen or stage will make a guest appearance on this family comedy. But you can count on a continued window into the life of a very real, young woman as she learns more about herself as an individual, and always manages to laugh at life's lessons.

Season Premiere: 8/23/99

8:30 The Parkers
It was only a matter of time before we spun-off UPN's highest rated comedy with Moesha's best friend taking center stage. Kim Parker has been Moesha Mitchell's best friend since preschool. She's been there for Moesha every time she got into trouble, though she usually caused it. Now that Kim's graduating high school and becoming an adult, she begins to appreciate the sacrifices her mother made giving birth so young. In her first appearance on Moesha, we meet Kim's mother, Mo'Nique. Irrepressible Mo'Nique always tells it like it is, and nowhere is she more honest than when she reveals to Kim a regret that she left high school one credit shy of graduating. Kim sees this as an opportunity to do something for her mother and she convinces the high school Vice Principal to let Mo'Nique finish the one class and march with Kim and the gang in the graduation ceremonies. Kim has succeeded in opening a door for her mother, but problems arise when Mo'Nique doesn't just walk through the door, but captivates the entire room and becomes an unwelcome, overbearing intrusion into Kim's life. Is Santa Monica Junior College and the city of Leimert Park ready for two strong, opinionated women as they explore the boundaries of friendship coupled with their mother-daughter relationship? We think so.

Series Premiere: 8/30/99

9:00 Grown Ups
UPN is proud to announce the return of Jaleel White to primetime in a clever comedy about becoming an adult whether you like it or not. Calvin Frasier is a total optimist, and it's a good thing too, since he's been dealt a hilarious series of blows that would make a lesser man curl up in a fetal position and cry. After his roommate skips out of town leaving Calvin practically homeless and worse yet, taking his George Foreman grill, Calvin is stunned to learn the girl of his high school dreams is engaged to another man, and his new female roommate, Robin, incorrectly assuming he's gay. With sage advice from his best friend Gordon, and Gordon's wife Shari, Calvin will easily jump over every hurdle adulthood throws in his path on his way to proving that anything is possible if you want it badly enough.

Series Premiere: 8/23/99

9:30 Malcolm and Eddie
Over the years, Malcolm McGee and Eddie Sherman have done almost everything together; run a business, fought each other's battles, even dated the same women. Yet, the two remain a study in contrast, as Eddie's freewheeling nature and Malcolm's conservative disposition collide on a regular basis. The results have yet to make them rich, but they have accumulated a wealth of experience in getting out of trouble against the odds. Through their many adventures and predicaments, Malcolm and Eddie, as played by Malcolm-Jamal Warner and comedian Eddie Griffin, have forged a relationship as close as any family's.

Season Premiere: 9/06/99

Tuesday 8:00 Dilbert
From the cartoon strip's creator Scott Adams and Emmy Award-winner executive producer Larry Charles ("Seinfeld," Mad About You") comes this animated series that follows Dilbert's bizarre odyssey through corporate America. Characters, both human and otherwise, populate Dilbert's landscape: Dogbert, Dilbert's not so faithful companion who is a cynical, arrogant, conniving mutt with his paws on the pulse of the absurdity of corporate culture; Dilmom, Dilbert's opinionated and competitive mother; Catbert, the bureaucratic and evil Human Resources Director of Dilbert's company; The Boss, Dilbert's clueless and unsympathetic boss; and Wally and Alice, Dilbert's colleagues who are trying to cope with their cubicle existence. This exciting team of Scott and Larry bring the cartoon strip and its biting social commentary to life in animated form. A star-studded cast including Daniel Stern, Chris Elliott, Jason Alexander (playing the recurring role of Catbert) and Kathy Griffin provide the voices.

Season Premiere: 11/02/99

8:30 Shasta McNasty
With his finger on the pulse of the youth market, producer Neal Moritz ("Cruel Intentions," "I Know What You Did Last Summer") delivers a fast-paced, creatively awesome single camera 1/2 hour in which music plays a starring role. "Shasta McNasty" introduces us to three young men (Scott, Dennis and Ran) who make an art form out of mediocrity. They have all, too, accumulated semi-celebrity status as a hip-hop band, but are content struggling to keep their lives status quo, as opposed to working hard to cross the threshold into fame and fortune. In the familiar multi-camera landscape of sitcoms, Shasta McNasty blows the roof off what's expected in primetime television. With bigger than life characters and clever musical devices, it promises broad comedy with clever social observation. Though the guys' instincts aren't always to do the right thing, and they usually make a situation worse before it gets better, they are fiercely loyal to each other and have the philosophy that life has a way of working itself out.
